History in stone

Salts Mill Chimney, Saltaire
I'm having to do a portfolio of twelve photographs for my Photography coursework, demonstrating some of the Photoshop techniques we've been learning. I started this particular project with a very unpromising picture of Salts Mill chimney, taken with my compact camera, set - for some unaccountable reason - with the white balance to tungsten... I'm not the most technically minded person! Anyway, after much playing I ended up with this, which I do quite like. I'm not generally a fan of heavily doctored images but on occasion they can 'tell a story'. I think the backdrop of stone here and the sepia toning allude to Saltaire's history and character.

For more conventional photos of the chimney, see here and here.

  1. That is very good, very classy. The picture and the texture match perfectly. I hope we are going to see the other eleven photographs.

  2. It's very interesting to see what you can do from something classical! i like your result. The wall behind becomes a part of the chimney and of its history; Well done! Like Alan, I hope to see the other 11!

  3. Nicely artistic! I have very little artist in me...
I think the other half of photography is to be able to recognise when something is wrong and then learn how to fix it next time round.

  5. Very clever idea, combining the chimney with the brick. Great job.

  6. Well I just checked to see if my compact camera's white balance had a tungsten setting and it doesn't. But if that's what you used for this effect, I like it! I'll have to experiment around with the other settings that I do have though, I never even noticed them all before your post. Looking forward to seeing more of your assignments! ~Lili

  7. I like this very much. Like you, I took a course in digital photography. Mine was with the OU. For me, the course helped extinguish any feelings of guilt about manipulating images for artistic effect. Please post the rest of your portfolio as and when you can.
