Blizzard

I interrupt the run of 'pretty' snow pictures to show you the latest development.  This was taken from my office window yesterday at about 1pm.  You can just make out Salts Mill chimney in the background.  It snowed on and off all day but, even so, here we have a good deal less than those unfortunates who live nearer the east coast.  My sister, in Lincoln, was unable to get home from work on Tuesday and spent the night in an hotel near her office.  The snow now seems to be covering much of eastern and central England and Scotland, to a depth unheard of at this time of year.  Because we're not used to it, it causes severe disruption to transport, businesses and schools.  It's probably no worse than 'in the olden days' but most of us have forgotten those times, as we've had a succession of mild winters until last year - and in the olden days we all lived much more local lives.  Now there are just too many people trying to get around on the roads.  I'm very thankful that I only have a short walk to work and that most of the things I really need are very localised.  Though I worry a bit about my mother, as neither my sister nor I could easily get to her in this weather.  I spoke to her last night and so far she seems fine, though she has not been out for over a week now.  It all shows little sign of letting up.  It might be a long winter!

(The most bizarre thing was that, even as it looked like this outside, inside we were in short-sleeved T-shirts with the desk fans blowing, as the temperature in the office rose to 27℃ (80℉)! The building is hermetically sealed and somehow they never can seem to get the heating right.)

  1. We saw England this morning on french tv; They showed closed airports and closed roads; We have the same weather in the northern part of France. But here, on the riviera, the sun is still shining today, with a bright blue sky; I'd like to be able to send you some piece of it!

  2. That picture had to be big. It is a great shot. It looks magical but I would hate to have to go to work in it. Then 27 is bit much to take inside . What a difference you must feel when daring to go out. I feel for your mother and other older people who are on their own. Hope she will be OK.

  5. Oh my, you people have really been hammered with a snowstorm!! So beautiful to look at - from inside a warm building! Be safe on the roads. Carrying a bag of kitty litter in the trunk of your car can come in handy if you get stuck. (Traction)

  9. Are you trying to tell me that this isn't a pretty photo? Snow makes even a parking look pretty.

They are saying we're in for the worst winter in 100 years...

  10. Malyss - I'll gladly accept whatever piece of the Riviera you can spare! And yes, Alan, I've been sneezing too... For a minute I wondered what Cranberry's kitty litter might be useful for ...oh yes, traction of course! And Ciel, it's official - the deepest snow ever in December (in Sheffield, one of our northern cities) since records began in 1882.

  11. The snow is nice for a few days. Not so nice when you have to dig loads of snow every day outside the house. I haven't driven my car since friday. Time for the weather to move on I think.

  12. Snow can be a major inconvenience when people are not used to it.

  13. I think it will be a strong winter this year. And I think this should not be a problem, if you don`t leave your office;-)) I wish you a nice weekend and send hugs from Luzia.

  14. We are expecting our first big snow storm here on Saturday. We had such a long, warm, beautiful fall, I was hoping to skip winter and head right into spring. Oh well. I love the fallig snow on your posts too! Very cute!
