Winter light

A familiar view of Saltaire's New Mill, with its ornate chimney.  I have featured this several times before on my blog, and yet sometimes I seem to see it afresh - in a new light, as it were.  I like the way the weak winter sunshine picks out the shape and lends a muted colour palette.

  1. They knew how to build to make a statement in those days; "Look at me, look at my big Mill".

  4. The stone of which the mill is constructed acts as a "pallet" as it were for the many and various different hues and tints that varying degrees of sunlight can bring to this impressive building.
With regards the imposing chimney most beautifully captured in your photograph. I am often required to attend the NHS training unit situated on the top floor, and it sometimes happens that I am able to gaze through the sky-light up to the chimney which is home to pigeons that launch themselves from the faux "bell-tower" and tumble and glide around the Florentine structure . . . . . I often have to make a concerted effort to curtail my reverie and bring my self back to the matter in hand . . health and Safety training . . . .

  5. I too live in a town with old factory buildings along the river and I find them quite wonderful and expressing a kind of pride which later buildings for similar purposes rarely do. I'm glad some are being preserved and used for other purposes now.

  10. I know what you mean about seeing things fresh with different natural lighting. Seasons and the change in foliage does that too.
