Free range eggs

I've mentioned before that Saltaire has a regular Farmer's Market on the 3rd Saturday of the month on the Caroline Street carpark.  Well, I'm pleased to announce that I have finally shopped there!  I bought some of these lovely brown eggs, two types of cheese (a lovely salty Cheddar and some creamy Yorkshire Blue, which I have enjoyed with pears) and some veg from 'Brickyard Organics' - including carrots, still with soil on (and a real carrot taste!) and some purple-sprouting broccoli.  I love that; my dad used to grow it in our garden but you rarely see it in the supermarket and, when they have it, it is classed as a premium veg and is expensive.  The market isn't cheap, but it feels one step closer to the earth and therefore somehow good for you.  It was all a bit of a nostalgia trip.  My grandma used to keep chickens and I haven't had an egg with a little fluffy feather stuck to it since then!

  1. I love farmers markets and farm shops. (And purple sprouting!) You do pay a bit more but you're always sure of good quality.

  2. I agree with this idea of "real taste"! I think that today's vegs are usually very insipid.I grew up in a farm and I miss such things as fresh eggs soooo much..

  3. If the third Saturday in May is the 18th, I should be there (with a couple of special guests). Will you be around?

  4. I can understand your nostalgia at seeing a feather stuck to an egg ... I was born and raised on a farm, and loved going to the chook hen to collect eggs which always came with a few soft fluffy feathers.

  5. It's true that farmers' market vegetables are better than what can be bought in supermarkets, and here they really aren't more expensive. But if your market eggs are an indicator, things generally are more expensive in the UK. We pay less than a third of what your eggs were priced at for free-range eggs from a local farmer ($1.50/doz.). It will be different in large cities, however.

  7. Yes, I use to collect the eggs when I was young and they came in to the house pretty dirty sometimes. They needed to be washed to make them good for the refrigerator.

  8. I love to shop at the farmer's market. The eggs are more expensive but at least the hens haven't been cooped up in tiny cages. The produce at our markets is often not more expensive than what I get in the Grocery, especially since it is so fresh that I don't have to throw any away.
