St Mary's

St Mary's Church in Kettlewell is a quintessentially English village church, beautifully cared-for and timelessly attractive. I especially like the churchyard, which is a lovely mixture of planted borders and wild flowers. Many of the headstones are simple hunks of rough local stone, brought in from the surrounding countryside.

And look who I spotted... Mrs Tiggywinkle, the hedgehog.... scurrying into the border.

  1. The perfect last resting place, with Mrs Tiggywinkle for company.

  2. Such beautiful country photographs and everything is so very green! Flowers everywhere too. It seems to me that the conservation efforts for the hedgehog have been quite successful. I see a lot more blog photos of them than when I was a child.

  3. Hedgehog heaven! I'd like to be there too. I've never seen a hedgehog. I think we were issued gophers instead out here in Oregon.

  4. How on earth did I miss St. Mary's?? I'll have to look back through my photos. Love these photos, Jenny, and I've never seen a real hedgehog. Maybe someday.

  6. Lovely church, considerably grander than our village churches. We don't have hedgehogs, of course, but I think our groundhogs fill a similar niche.

  7. An English church with a classic English garden.

  9. Beautiful collage of this pretty church and it's surrounds, love all the cottage plants and flowers, and that was pretty clever to spot Mrs. Tiggywinkle before she disappeared out of sight, well spotted.

  10. How beautiful! As a confirmed sentimental Anglophile, this is just what I think of when I think of England -- right down to the hedgehog!
