To distract the eye...

I suppose if you're going to build a hideous modern car-park next to an interesting old stone mill, then the best thing to do is to plant some trees in front that tone with it! This is the car-park belonging to the massive Victoria Mills complex in Shipley, which was converted into apartments a few years ago. See here also. Most of our trees are not yet showing their autumn colours but these ornamental types (maples?) tend to turn red much earlier than our native trees. (Another iPhone photo, somewhat messed with in Photoshop.)

  1. The trees do soften the stark building and match the color on the building too.iPhones take good photos

  4. Hmmm... hard to disagree with either the "hideous" or the saving grace of what to me look like Japanese maples, one of my favorite kinds of trees. :-)

  5. Everywhere the same, old buildings are destroyed and glass boxes built ! Even the beautiful trees are not a consolation !

  6. It's sad, because I think modern buildings can mix with old ones. They don't have to try to mimic the old, but they do need to make an effort to understand the and fit in with the context.

  7. I understand your point of view, but honestly, I have seen many, many modern buildings that I dislike more than this garage. But, of course, I do agree that the red leafy tree (perhaps a Japanese maple) looks good against the garage.
