St John the Evangelist, Baildon

Baildon's Parish Church, St John the Evangelist, was built in 1848 with the tower added later, in 1928, to commemorate those killed in the 1st World War. It is not very big inside and when it was first built it was not a parish church, being then part of the parish of Otley. It is linked with St James, a pretty church I showed on my blog some time ago, and St Hugh's down in the valley.

  1. I wonder if today's churches will last as long as these old ones. This one looks strong and sturdy.

  2. I love these old churches, Jenny. We have one here that they are going to tear down for a grocery store and a strip mall! There was a vigil for it last night, but I know the man who owns it now, and he will not let go of it. The church cannot afford it any longer. I had better get over there if I want a photo because it is on the demolition list. So sad...built I think in 1837. Another loss of history. I loved when I visited Bath, they had recently passed a no tear down law.

  5. When the sky is blue in Britain in winter, what a prettty light it offers to the old grey stones!

  6. Is that stone naturally gray, or is it gray from soot in the air?
