Ducks on ice

More snow pictures - a bit belated as it has all thawed here now (though we might get more... it's certainly cold enough). The canal, with its water being relatively shallow and static, quickly ices over when it is cold. However, up by Hirst Lock where the side channel pours in, the movement of the water creates a small ice-free pool. It's here that the mallards congregate. I am always amused to see them slipping and sliding on the ice; they actually seem to enjoy it, looking like novice skaters on a rink.

  2. Nice picture. But have you ever seen them fly in and land on the ice? They think it's water and are surprised to find themselves zooming across the ice!

  3. It looks like there are still places where the ducks can get through the ice and have a bit of a drink.

  4. It looks as though some of them really are skating on thin ice.

  6. A word of advice to the ducks, don't relax. As you will have discovered by now, more was on the way. I must confess, I stuck with taking photographs of it through the window.

  9. It is always fun to watch the ducks on ice. They sort of know that it was water and wished it was water. Fortunately there is an opening somewhere for them to swim in and be ducklike.
