New England 2: Misty morning in Williamstown

Williamstown is an attractive town in the Berkshire hills, Massachusetts, dominated by Williams College, an elite, liberal arts college. It seems a very prosperous place, full of elegant buildings and pretty, painted houses. I was charmed by the 'New England style' homes, much copied in magazines over here in Old England. They are almost all wooden, clad in shingles or weatherboard painted in soft pastel shades. Many have large porches or wrap-around verandahs. I really want one now!

I like the harmony of colours in this photo.  It was taken in the early morning when it was really quite foggy but the diffused light was pleasant. The only thing that maddened me was all those infernal power-lines criss-crossing every street - often hard to avoid unless I wanted to get myself killed standing in the middle of a road. We have some thin telephone wires here but the thicker cables are usually buried.

  1. Lovely colours and composition. My sentiments too, I hate those awful cables that they have in so many countries. Although I live high up on a Common we have no cables whatsoever to spoil the outlook.

  2. If I could fly to USA, this is the part of the country that I'd like to visit the most. I'm glad you were there and are kind enough to share what you saw. I just love this kind of house, and the mood of your picture is so attractive and beautiful! I'm impatient to see more!

  3. Love the colours - but I think weatherboarding originated in England and travelled west...

  5. Yeah, the older towns are full of above ground cables...that's just how they did it back then. Newer places have them underground. It's a lovely, typical look in that picture...so autumnal and american. :)

  8. A fabulous shot. Great composition and colour. Fog always makes a good photo too. I must go back and read how you came to be in USA. You can rub out power lines with post processing programs.

  10. The fog really softened up this scene, didn't it?

If you didn't mention the power lines, I would not have noticed them. Most of the time, they don't bother me. They don't detract from this photo.
