Stepping out

It's Weekend Reflections time again, hosted by James at Newtown Area Photo. And here is an intrepid family crossing the river at Bolton Abbey via the stepping stones. Me...? I used the footbridge!

Bolton Abbey is a famous beauty spot (about 20 miles north of Saltaire) at the southern end of the Yorkshire Dales, where the River Wharfe winds its way through meadows and woods belonging to the estate of the Duke of Devonshire.
The Abbey ruins are the remains of a priory (small monastery) founded in 1151. When the monasteries were dissolved by King Henry 8th, the nave of the priory was allowed to continue as a parish church, so you have the interesting situation where there is a small but active local church (which, incidentally, is really beautiful inside) within the imposing ruined abbey.

  2. Yes I could see that balance would be essential. I guess I would want to check them out to see how sturdy I felt as I stepped one at a time. It is a great shot.

    But I LOVE the background!the ruins among the green landscape, with that wonderful grey sky above.. How beautyful!!

  7. We have a quite famous set of stepping stones at Dovedale; a very popular place for visitors because the Dale is a local beauty spot. Very recently, the local council capped every stone with a concrete top to make them safer! I thought that the whole point of stepping stones was the challenge of crossing without falling in!! (And, yes, there is a footbridge very nearby, so visitors don't *have* to use the stones!). I hear it on good authority that the crossing now looks dreadful "Not natural at all!" GRRRRRR!!

  9. Martin - the water is quite deep there. Later on, there were some children (10-11 years old?) in the water close to the stones and the water came up to their armpits.

  15. Gorgeous capture and fantastic reflections! What a breathtakingly beautiful place and so much wonderful history! I would love to visit there and maybe even try the stepping stones. Enjoy your weekend!

  16. wow I'm not really sure I would want to walk across those - there are so many of them. I did cross stepping stones like this in April in N Ireland but it was only half the length of these.
