Technical question!

Diane has asked me why I don't post my photos larger.  Partly it's because the template I use needed stretching as larger pictures lap over the sidebar.  (I've done that now). Also, I have a very large screen on my iMac so I can view a whole photo even if it's quite large.  But I'm not sure what the effect is when you have a laptop with a much smaller screen.  Can people view a large image in its entirety?  I don't know if there's any advantage to posting large if it means people can't see the whole image at once.  The size Diane uses is comfortable on my screen but sometimes those Karen and Carolina (for example) use fill my whole screen.  What do they look like on a smaller screen?  I've never viewed a blog on a laptop - does what you see adjust to the size of screen?  What I mean is, do my usual pictures look very small on a small screen or do they look the same size as they look on my large screen (about 10x8 cm)?  I'm not very techy-minded.  Am I missing something here?

I have put today's picture again at the larger size here - which on my screen is 16x12 cm. And I can see the whole picture but only about 4 or 5 lines of accompanying text.  What does this look like to you?

And does it matter to you whether you only see a photo and have to scroll to read the accompanying words - or do you prefer to be able to look and read at the same time?

  1. This size looks fine to me and I can see a few lines of text as you say. However, I don't mind the smaller version either because I can always enlarge it when I want to take a closer look which I often do, just takes a click. But then it is an instant gratification to see the larger version. On my blog the pictures are small - because of the template I use - and people again can enlarge it if they want to. I might be rambling here so please excuse me, I am a rambler :)

  2. On my laptop the photo comes out same size as on my iMac.

  3. I view blogs on a 13" Macbook. I don't know the technical ins and outs either. The second photo does not fit on my screen, I have to scroll up and down a bit to see the whole image. When I click on the images and then click on the new image it takes up about 2/3 of my screen and I don't have to scroll to view the full image.

I hope that helps but it even sounds confusing to me.

  4. Wayne - that's what I suspected. So I am thinking I will stay with the smaller size image. As Denise says, people can click to see it bigger. But if anyone else has any comments to make to help me decide, please do so.

  5. On my laptop, the bigger image fills the screen with just a few lines of text showing. Either is fine because I tend to click on your images to enlarge them anyway.

  6. I have a 13" Dell laptop. I can only see this entire large pic if I run IE in a full screen (no toolbars), and then there's no room for text on top/bottom.
I certainly don't mind clicking to enlarge.

My wife has a 17" Mac laptop and normal blog photos appear stupidly tiny. Must be a resolution issue.

My question to you is whether you manually set the 480x640 size for this pic?

  7. A wonderful picture! It fills the screen on my laptop from top to bottom and that's fine with me -- I don't mind scrolling!

  8. Here's my take... when it comes to art works framed--- I love to look at miniatures. Hence I really enjoy the small format,

  9. Sean - this large pic is the size that Blogger calls XLarge. My usual size is Blogger's Large. I haven't set the size manually - not sure how to do that.

  10. Hi Jenny,

Interesting mixed bag of responses here!

My new camera is a Canon Power Shot SX210. It's a slimline digital. Nothing mega fancy, but significantly more powerful than my old one. 14mp and 14x optical zoom (as opposed to 5mp and 3x zoom). I'm loving that I can zoom in and take photos of things that would have been microscopic before!

  11. I think it's a personal preference. I prefer larger formats and I don't mind scrolling. But smaller is also fine. This however is a gorgeous view. You've really turned me on to visiting your area someday.

  12. I like Birdman enjoy the smaller images. I don't mind scrolling through the post. If there is a photo that I want to see in a larger format I am happy to just click on it. Lovely photo by the way.

  13. The photo is just beautiful! I have a laptop and see it as about a 12 x 16 cm. pic which is very nice. I can always scroll down to read, and do have a couple toolbars that make it so that I don't see quite the entire photo. Still, it is so nice. I've often thought about having someone change my template so I can have a larger photo format like that. So nice!

Thanks for commenting on Cranberry Morning. I would love to attend St. Paul's Cathedral on Christmas Eve. :-)

  14. Jenny, I don't have advice . . . I have been thinking about enlarging my photos, too, and I wondered what answers you would get. I do my photos as Large (on Blogger), same as your original photos. I have thought that anyone who wants a closer look can click and get a full screen.

  15. Maybe I'm being selfish, but I'm voting for the larger size as it looks fine on my screen.

  16. I like the smaller size too since I can enlarge it if I want to. This is a lovely bridge!

  17. bigger looks more stunning.^0^

  18. Well, the survey is inconclusive! I feel a bit uncomfortable with the larger size myself, certainly in portrait format - the landscape ones seem more manageable. The answer would be to have a size somewhere between the two, since XLarge is a massive leap from Large. But I am not sure how to engineer that.

  19. This screen thing is really annoying! My sister's computer screen is more or less the same size as mine and some of the photos on my blog look out of place there, however on small Mac screens everything seems to be fine. I really don't get this...
This larger photo of yours seems perfect as I see it. And it's beautiful, by the way.

  20. I read all these comments with interest as I have been thinking about this for a while also. I do think it's a massive leap in size now that I see it here in portrait form. I don't mind scrolling or enlarging. Thanks for posting this useful debate. I think i'll stick with the smaller version, it'll hide my picture flaws !!

  21. I have a laptop and I have to scroll down to view the entire photo above. When you post a landscape version it all fits though. ~Lili

  22. Yes there are certain templates that let the pictures be larger but my templates make the extra large invade into the side bar territory. I like just clicking on them to see the close detail.

  23. I like it BIG as you know. I think your good photography is more easily enjoyed when it is big,

  24. This photograph deserves a bigger size!

  25. This was an interesting discussion for me too, Jenny. Much more often than not I do enlarge your photos, because they merit a good look. I'll be happy with whatever you decide, whether I'm on my PC or laptop. With the template I use, if I set my photos x-large, the landscape ones cross into my side bar -- I know there are manual ways to correct that; I just don't have the time to do it each time or to learn how to fix. I once tried changing the template, but it disorganized the layouts of all earlier posts. What I do, though - mainly because I often use a series of small thumbnail size to "tell a story" - is add the html to make the photos enlarge to different tabs.
