Homeward bound

In the summer I often walk home from work along the canalside, but in winter it's too dark and lonely so I tend to take the main road, noisy and busy.  Just occasionally, I will cut through the car-park at the back of Salts Mill and walk up between the railway line and the mill buildings.  It's further that way, but an interesting walk. When there's no-one else about, you can almost hear the clack of wooden clogs on the cobbles.  Just imagine 2500 mill workers hurrying home at the end of a shift.  These days it's more tranquil and I find the walk gives me a welcome breathing space between the different demands and rhythms of work and home.

  1. Wonderfully evocative textual accompaniment to your striking photograph, Jenny!

And, thank you so much for visiting my blog & leaving such a comprehensive message. Pity about the size issue, but kudos to you for having your photographic talent recognised :)

  2. Nice evening shot, 'warmed up' by the light from the windows.

  3. Yes, this place at night seems full of workers' ghosts..But I perfectly understand that need of breath between two worlds, work and home.

  4. Great emotional shot and text. It is good to be able to have time to transfer the brain from work to family. I used to have a mental picture of a switch in my brain which I used to turn off work and turn on family while I was driving home from work. Now I have no work and no family (at home) so the switch has rusted over.

  5. And there would be the sound of their clogs and the sparks from the iron plates on their clog soles striking the stone pavement.

  6. Jenny, I love this photo. When Simon and Garfunkle sang about the sound of silence, I believe this is what they had in mind. Very, very Buddhist. What a lovely person you must be.

  7. What a beautiful photo! I squint my eyes and can imagine it's the Washington Monument in D.C. :-)

  9. I love this shot. The sky is such a rich shade of blue.

I'm trying to orient myself. Is the cycle shop behind you?

  10. It really is a thought-provoking image. The earlier commenter who mentioned Simon and Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence is on to something. And, maybe Saltaire is free from the woes of bigger cities, but watch out for yourself when walking in out-of-the-way paths.

  11. It's a gorgeous shot at that time of day when the lights are just coming on, but with no sign of anyone walking about, it kind of leaves me with a little apprehension, kind of like a scene in a scary movie! ~Lili

  15. This is such an evocative photo Jenny,I almost feel as though I'm there. I love how the sky is that wondrous blue just before dark, when the lamps blearily come on.

(However it does have a lonely somewhat sinister feel too...so DO take care, far better to take the more populated pathways especially now your words are, 'out there'.

    Kindest regards
    Jane
