Christmas shopping
Here's an unusual view of one of the main pedestrianised shopping areas, Briggate, in Leeds city centre. It is usually thronged with shoppers but on Saturday there was also a fun fair. I paid my £1 and climbed the helter-skelter to see what the view was like from the top! Mind you, I chose to return sedately down the steps rather than take the quick route down the slide. (I had my precious Nikon hanging round my neck!) Somewhere among the crowds you will see a Salvation Army band playing Christmas carols - and also a fire engine. The fire crew was in the Victoria Quarter arcade and seemed to be pumping out the basement of a jeweller's shop - I'm not sure why. It all added to the fun!
11m Britons were expected to go shopping last Saturday, spending something like £1.05 billion. (I wonder how they work that out?)
Not sure what the Mad Hatter's tea-cup ride has to do with Christmas, but hey, each to his own.
ReplyDeleteVery festive view; thanks!
ReplyDeleteA busy street!Geat idea to climb to have a better view!
ReplyDeleteYou look to be having mild weather, as are we. I like turning streets into pedestrian malls in shopping areas, but it is an idea that has come and gone in this country.
ReplyDeleteOh how exciting. I once was told that there was a jewlers in the VQ which had a water powered security system. The water was said to power the mechanism which raised and lowered the security grill / screen in the window, an old victorian invention. I dismissed this as odd, but now you say one was flodded - perhaps it was right!
ReplyDeleteLooking at the photo, I think this is why I like online shopping...and then I like to simply visit places like this without having the pressure of finding gifts. :-)
ReplyDeletewhat a cool photo...I can feel the excitement!
ReplyDeleteSame here ! and who talks about economic crisis ??
ReplyDeleteAt least the sun is shining in Leeds !
Nice shot, Jenny. With the global economy in the doldrums, I am glad to read about people going out shopping. It is hugely important. Many merchants make 40 percent or more of their annual revenue in the holiday season.
ReplyDeleteEleven million folk spending 1.05 billion pounds works out about £90.00 each . . . . .which means I have spent approx three times the national average . . . I suppose that I am stimulating the economy in that case ? ? ?
ReplyDeleteThat must have been a good day for the economy!
ReplyDeleteNice bird's eye view shot Jenny! ~Lili
ReplyDeleteI often wonder how statistics are gathered too... especially when they announce a very specific number like £1.05 billion. But it's good to see the place buzzing. And you got a terrific shot!
