'Human statues' are increasingly common in our city centres and at events, but this lady is the first one I've seen in Saltaire. Being a statue, she didn't seem to talk so I unfortunately didn't get her name or any details. She had the most amazing ability to remain still, even when people (me!) were poking camera lenses in her direction or making comments. But when you threw coins into her basket she executed the most graceful low curtsey. She was a fun addition to the general air of celebration and discovery in Saltaire on Saturday.
How extraordinary . . . but you know an image of this lady caught in a full moon-light at mid-night on the promenade in Robert's Park would, I feel, be an image indeed.
ReplyDeleteI was unable to attend the heritage week-end, but I thank you for capturing and sharing some of the magic.
I don't know how they manage to remain so still. We saw some at the Cambridge Folk Festival, a few years ago, and they were great fun.
ReplyDeleteAmazingly talented. "The White Lady" is said to be the resident ghost in a number of places in Yorkshire -- certainly in Flamborough.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't stand still for that long ... She looks so very elegant and I'm sure a welcome visitor to the streets of Saltaire
ReplyDeleteI've only seen a living statue once but I too found it really impressive how it was able to stand so still.
ReplyDeleteWasn't that fun! I don't know how they can stay in one place so long. I bet they're happy to get donations for more than one reason.
ReplyDeleteThey always kind of frighten me..She could be a marvellous ghost!
ReplyDeleteoh how fun! That is just unreal! I think I would laugh or at least smirk when people were in my face! ha. I wonder if anyone things she really is a statue and are startled when she does move! ha.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant series of images on the canal barges Jenny, I wonder what it would be like to live on a houseboat. I remember these 'living statues' when Aimee and I were in Rome, some of them could be quite scary if you got too close. She looks lovely though, very ladylike!!
ReplyDeleteHi there, the white lady is me! Thank you all so much for all your lovely comments and thanks Jenny for taking such a great photo of me :) If you'd like to see more images of The Woman in White and my other human statues and living tables then please visit my facebook page Statuesque Physical Arts.
