The BBC at Salford Quays

So, the Olympics London 2012 has started... Fabulous opening ceremony last night.  Well done Danny Boyle and thousands of volunteers!  My favourite bit was Mr Bean. He just cracks me up.  But the whole evening was amazing.

I'm excited about my trip to London next week - though to be honest the whole Olympics thing hasn't up to now really had a lot of impact in this neck of the woods, apart from the brief passing of the Torch through the area.  I think the Chinese athletes were based in Leeds for a while to acclimatise and train.  In Manchester, they are hosting some of the Olympic football tournament at Old Trafford so there is a bit more of a buzz there.
Manchester is also now the home of a large section of the BBC, in its new headquarters in Media City, Salford Quays.  It's an impressive regeneration project around the old docks on the Manchester Ship Canal.  ITV Granada are also building new studios there, moving from central Manchester.  If you look closely you can just about see the Olympic logo on the side of the building on the left.
Of course, most of the Olympics coverage comes direct from London.  The BBC, along with other major broadcasters, have studios actually in the Olympics Park.

  1. I must admit that the BBC's view that the whole nation is a-tingle with Olympic excitement doesn't ring true for me either. Last night the pub garden was very full and my neighbours were having a barBQ - not many folks glued to the box to watch the opening ceremony. Nothing a few gold medals won't rectify though!

  4. I heard on the news last night that NBC, the network providing Olympic coverage in the U.S., had as many people in London as there were U.S. athletes. I think the press must outnumber athletes 10 to 1!

  6. As an Englishwoman, you should be proud of the way the Olympics has begun. The opening ceremony had lots of high spots, from Mr. Bean, to Bond and the Queen arriving by helicopter, to Paul McCartney (even though his voice is long past its prime).

This building sure doesn't look like Saltaire . . .

  7. When I booked my Eurostar ticket to London, I actually had completely forgotten about the Olympics ! I was rather surprised by the warm welcome in St. Pancras with music, banners and flags and noticed that several groups of athletes had been in the same train as I ! I took the bus to Victoria station to see a max of London's Olympic games decoration, and it was a real good sightseeing ! what an atmosphere ! After an excursion to Stonehenge I arrived in Eastbourne on Thursday night. We watched the opening of course and I found it great ! I have never watched one til the end, because it was so boring, but this time, what a presentation ! so full of humor ! I loved the Queen with Mr. Bond and Mr. Bean was priceless !
