A bit of royal pomping...

'A bit of royal pomping' was how my daughter described Garter Day!

All the frantic camera clicking resulted in an epic fail on my part. I had taken my smaller Panasonic Lumix as it has a much longer telephoto lens than I have for my Nikon. But our position was a bit tricky, peering through a metal fence and with several other people's elbows and shoulders in front, and I had not taken into account the long shutter delay on my camera. People around did better with their iPhones..

In fact, I barely saw the Queen herself. She's tiny! The photo below comes courtesy of a lovely lady from Giggleswick, Sarah Williamson, who very kindly emailed it to me and agreed that I could show it here.

These, and a few more photos, are also on my other blog, Seeking the Quiet Eye.

  1. What a magnificent spectacle :) She's quite an impressive lady, your queen. I just recently watch a (British) documentary about her on Swedish television.

  4. How nice it must have been to be there life ! I had Wellington and his alleys in their historical uniforms here in Waterloo over the weekend to celebrate the Waterloo battle of 1815. Must say that the costumes haven't changed much, lol !
I always admire the phantasy of the hat creators !

  6. This is a grand collection of photos. I know how you feel about missing "the shot." Sometimes my DSLR takes a frustratingly long time to focus itself.

I spent a day with the royals about 30 (?) years ago. I went to the Braemar Games in Scotland. It was the year after Charles and Diana were married. The royals were in an area not far from where I was sitting. I probably have photos, but who knows where they are.
