There are a number of reflective spheres dotted around the docklands quarter in Leeds so, coming across this one, you tend immediately to think the figure is a real person. Only when you get closer do you see that it is a bronze statue. The sculpture, '
A Reflective Approach', is by Kevin Atherton (b 1959), a renowned artist who studied for a time at Leeds Polytechnic Fine Art department. There is actually a second similar but smaller sphere further back from the dock than this one. The whole artwork is intended to suggest man's struggle with life, a Sisyphean task.

Wow ! that's a very special sculpture !
ReplyDeleteOK, I had to look that up. In fact, referencing the sculpture - which I must say I rather like (and you have captured beautifully), you could say I'm looking into it...
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a wonderful piece of art!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece of art and a really interesting photo.
ReplyDeleteI love this! Great piece of art, and nice choice for B&W.
ReplyDeleteHe did a good job, as did you withe your photo.
ReplyDeleteMarvelous, jennyfreckles, both the excellent sculpture and your excellent image. It is the kind of photograph that rewards a longer viewing. I still don't know what Sisyphean means (but Google and I will be finding out momentarily) and I don't know how you managed not to appear in the reflection. (I guess that is why you chose a portrait orientation.)
ReplyDeletewow cool shot! love it in black and white

I love all your pictures, and check daily. My guess is that you used the man's body to hide your own reflection. The hand is at the centre of the sphere, so that must be where the camera reflection would be. Or perhaps you digitally edited yourself or your tripod out. Got me thinking!
ReplyDeleteNo trickery in processing. I just managed to hide myself behind the figure. I was standing far enough away that my reflection was quite small.
ReplyDeleteOoh! I love this!
ReplyDeleteLovely! Very unique!
ReplyDeleteHave a Beautiful Day!!
Peace :)
