Snow day

Some schools have had 'snow days', choosing to close because they are worried about the safety of children and staff travelling to and from school. I'll swear we never had 'snow days' when I was a child. I distinctly recall our steeply sloping primary school playground being lethal with ice and the braver kids sliding down. (They wouldn't allow that these days either.) And standing in the freezing cold snow waiting for a bus outside school. A friend told me her two older boys were off school but the youngest child is still having to go, as he attends a smaller local school that he can walk to. Not a happy bunny...!

There were a few local children enjoying some sledging on the hillside just above Saltaire. Those light plastic sledges certainly zip along. The main roads have been gritted and were fairly clear by the time I ventured out, but all the side roads are snowed over and quite icy, as you can see from the photo below. Some hopeful person has put their bin out for collection - but all the refuse collectors are on gritter duty.

  1. Our headmaster used to throw a bucket of water on part of the playground so we'd have a 'slide' for playtime. What would health and safety make of that? I also remember the old man who used to light the fire in the mornings falling off his bike one icy morning, consequently there was no heat in the school and we were allowed to keep our coats on till the headmaster got the fires going. A different age.

  2. Today is the third day off school for my grandson, it was fun at first but now he's bored! As well as health and safety a huge problem nowadays is litigation. There are a minority of bad parents just looking for a reason to sue.

  3. Loved those shots. The first one is like a Christmas card. Also enjoyed/agreed with all said above - though we've stuck our bins out because we don't want to miss the little tinkers when they do eventually make it.

  4. The Billings is a super hill for tobogganing above Rawdon tarn. Those who did not have a sledge went sailing down the hill on old car bonnets turned upside down. They span around and were really fast!

  5. No snow days when I grew up either. Weird that we can't coop with a little snow these days.

  8. We had maybe one or two snow days when I was a kid and they were after massive storms with feet of snow! Kids love those days!

  9. Hoe beautiful! Our county's schools close t the first sign of snow as most students ride busses and the mountain roads can be treacherous.

  10. I should add that one memorable year, 1978, schools were closed for six weeks!

  12. Oh, we definitely had snow days when I was a kid, but I lived in an area where one storm could bring 12 - 18 inches of snow, and if there were three or four storms the snow might have been seven feet high. (1969 and 1978 were like that, though I was already an adult and was working.)
