These days the village of
Cottingley is part of the suburban sprawl between Shipley and Bingley but there has been a hamlet here for hundreds of years. In 1753 a toll bar was established on the main Bradford to Keighley Road near here (where travellers had to pay to use the road). In the 1860s the village consisted of 142 houses, five or six farms, a tannery and a mill. My photo shows old houses on Main Street, originally the village centre - although now the centre of the village is located in the more modern estate around Littlelands.
"England" and "cottages"..it makes me dream when those two words are together in quotes or pictures! :o)
ReplyDeleteCharming! Love the bright white walls & bright white snow contrasted with the touch of red from the postbox :)
ReplyDeleteIt captures so well the way that we build houses up hillsides in West Yorkshire : stacked like odd books propping themselves up.
ReplyDeleteNice image, Jenny. I like the perspective from below looking up, and I like the contrast between the dark brick buildings and the central white one.
ReplyDeleteNice photo. And there's just something so cheery about those little red post boxes. Kinda like looking out my window and seeing a cardinal in the snow under the bird feeder.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Malyss -- an English cottage sounds heavenly -- and I expect the price of one is appropriately astronomical!
ReplyDeleteThat red mailbox really stands out in the snow. Although your snow looks so much more manageable than ours! ~Lili
