Heritage Trail 5 - Entrance to Roberts Park
'Turn left down the ramp and follow the path around to the right, to cross the River Aire by the modern footbridge...' At one time Victoria Road went straight across the river by a road bridge, but the bridge was demolished as unsafe in the 1950s and a metal footbridge now provides access to the park. Saltaire Park, opened by Sir Titus in 1871, was intended to provide leisure space for Saltaire's residents, as most of the open land within the village was given over to allotments. It contained formal landscaping and flowerbeds with a promenade, bandstand and pavilion, as well as a cricket field and boating area on the river. The park's name was changed in 1920 when it was gifted to Bradford Corporation by Sir James Roberts, then owner of the mill. The park underwent a substantial renovation in 2010. ReplyDeleteAh, good! Had my fix! Now I can get back to my day :)
ReplyDeleteThis picture is especially lovely with those happy little souls enjoying their outing in the crisp, bracing air!
That's my kingfisher bridge! If you look right from there the view of the back of the mill is tremendous. And the kingfisher was working the space between the mill and the right-hand bank. It's such a great memory for me. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteJenny, I love this photo! This is spectacular in black and white with such great contrast. Thanks for another photo which creates an involuntary sigh.
ReplyDeleteAJ - there is regularly a kingfisher - or maybe more than one, along this stretch of river. They are hard to phptograph (without a very long lens and lots of patience) but lovely to watch.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the sign for the Boathouse Inn I actually remembered what it looked like from your previous post. Hey, I'm really learning my way around your stomping grounds! ~Lili
ReplyDeleteThe children add a lot, don't they?
