A purple carpet

A view of Bradford's Lister Park.  I like this spring-flowering heather, which makes a lovely carpet of purple.  I was thinking of buying a heather for my garden - until I remembered that they like peaty, acidic soil, which is not what my garden has.  I suppose I could grow some in a tub if I bought the right compost.

  1. That is such a beautiful scene inviting one to dance down the path. A tub of purple carpet sounds a good idea.

  2. I have alkaline/limey soil too, but you can buy heathers that are tolerant. I have what I call my tapestry of heathers and they are looking wonderful just now. You need to look for varieties that have Erica darleyensis or Erica carnea on their label and they will grow happily - there are plenty of colours within the two species. A specialist nursery or online are the places to go.

  3. Hello Jenny, I just read your 'sodding' comment on Occasional Toronto, and had to come and see who had the same reaction as me!
Lovely to discover your blog and a corner of Britain I don't know.
