Christmas shopping

I've been invited by a friend and former colleague to join and small (very select!) online photography club. The idea is that we have a monthly theme, take photos around the theme during the month, select one to put on the club website at the month end and then each add our comments and constructive criticisms to each other's. The idea appeals as a way of breaking out of the creative box I've lately felt I've put myself in. (It's easy to end up taking photos 'to feed the blog' and nothing more.)

December's theme is 'Intersection' so I have been thinking about and looking for subjects that would interpret that. This is, for me, a new way of approaching photography. Though I can often find photos retrospectively that fit a theme, I rarely go out with a specific theme in mind.

Opportunities for photography being scarce at the moment, I ended up taking my DSLR with me when I went Christmas shopping in Leeds.  That was an 'intersection' in itself!  This photo of the new Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre could be one interpretation of the theme - both in the way the walkways criss-cross and in those complicated spider's web Christmas decorations.

If you're wondering what the horse is about, look here. (And that is another photo that could, I suppose, fit the 'Intersection' theme quite well.)

  1. That's a beautiful picture ! I love to participate in Photo memes on my Keyholepictures blog. There is each day another theme. That forces me to go out and look for appropriate photos for a theme !

  2. It's an interesting idea, though I always feel that when I go out looking for something in particular I end up by missing everything else! However your photo was arrived at I rather like it.

    1. Yes, I tend to think that too John, but sometimes it's good to try a new tactic.

  3. This photo would work. I participate in most of the CDP themes and enjoy the challenge of seeking out photos to illustrate the month's theme. But, like John says, you also need to be alert to other things you are seeing.

  8. That is novel Jenny, a life size horse up above the crowds! I like the idea of your new group, sounds like a fun way to stretch the boundaries a bit.. I've joined a Black and White blog that feeds my love of monochrome photography and over Christmas the City of Perth asked me to take photos of the events going on around the city, was fun and a little nerve wracking also :) Will you put a link to the photo that you chose to put up at the end of each month? Here's wishing yourself and family all the very best for 2014.

  10. I like your shot... and I almost always take my camera along. As I told my husband -- You never know -- there might be an elephant...

  11. Great photo, but you were lucky to get away with it. I tried a similar photo at the White Rose Centre and was escorted from the premises by a security officer (something to do with aiding and abetting terrorists). As far as the smaller and even more exclusive photo club of our annual challenge is concerned I hang my head in shame. I bought a new car and went to Silsden and took loads of photos. When I got home I discovered that the had all failed and the camera wasn't functioning properly. So I have got a new camera and now I just need to head back to Silsden. But I will do it, just you wait and see.

    1. No worries about Silsden, Alan, life is too short to have such pressures in it.
