The Night Watch
I think there has probably been a night watchman on duty at the gates of Salts Mill for the last 160 years. (Not the same one, of course!)
This gives me an excuse to mention that I bought a print at an exhibition during the Festival. It's called "Hidden Treasure" by local artist Jane Fielder (see here). She apparently came to Saltaire one evening and was inspired to paint some very atmospheric pictures, in a style quite a lot different from her usual technique. The one I bought shows this area of the Mill, though from a different angle, at night with a few lighted windows. It's very mysterious and I love it. Click here (Jane's website) to see it - the third picture from the top.

ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely night shot Jenny
ReplyDeleteIt is a fine night scene, jennyfreckles.
ReplyDeleteSomehow, Saltaire wouldn't have seemed complete without a night watchman. There's a wonderfully atmospheric quality to this photograph. Just my kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteA cheerful planting!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed catching up with Saltaire and am happy you weren't swept away on flood waters -- you certainly got some fine pictures!
Oops, I thought I was on a different post. But I wanted to add how much I like this particular photo -- something about it-- the dark and the light and the angles-- makes me think of an Italian painter of architecture whose name escapes me just now.
ReplyDeleteI love this photo! i love that window. I love the glimpse into what someone is doing. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteI love this shot with the lit up window and watchman. The paintings on the link are nice too. A good purchase No. 3.
